“Larry was a blast to work with," said John Athanason, Marketing and Public Relations Director for Weeki Wachee Springs State Park. "He was so gracious - and totally enthralled with the mermaids. He also brought his wife and kids for the visit and they got a big kick out of watching him put on a fish tail and get in the pool. Like everyone else who's ever tried it, Larry was surprised how challenging it is to be a mermaid. Of all the celebrities I’ve worked with over the years, Larry was one of the nicest I’ve ever met.” John added that Larry was especially impressed with the beauty of Bayport and Hernando County's coastline.

Florida-friendly fertilizing tips

The Southwest Florida Water Management District kicked off a new multi-media public service advertising campaign this week to educate residents on how to fertilize their lawns appropriately.

Recent studies have shown that rising nitrate levels in many local water bodies can be traced to fertilizer. Nitrate is a form of nitrogen that is found in inorganic fertilizers. When fertilizer is needed and applied correctly, the lawn absorbs the nitrogen. However, fertilizers applied improperly can run off lawns and into local water bodies, harming water quality and threatening the plants and animals that depend on clean water for survival.

The campaign focuses on these Florida-friendly fertilizing tips:

· Use slow-release fertilizers.

· Always follow package directions.

· Don’t fertilize before a heavy rain.

· Fertilize only when needed and only when grass is actively growing.

The three-month, “Florida-Friendly Fertilizing” campaign will include television, radio and newspaper advertisements throughout the 16-county region. The District has also created a series of tools to help residents learn to apply fertilizer appropriately. By visiting www.WaterMatters.org/fertilizing, residents can get step-by-step instructions on fertilizing appropriately as well as watch a series of corresponding how-to videos. Residents can also order the free 17-page, “Do-It-Yourself Guide to Florida-Friendly Fertilizing” for additional information.

Fertilizing appropriately is one of the nine principles of Florida-Friendly Landscaping TM, a set of guidelines developed by the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences to protect our natural resources while promoting beautiful landscapes.

Three Weeks Remain in Appeal Period for Updated Hernando County Flood Maps

March 2, 2011, is the final day of the three-month time period during which residents may file appeals and protests pertaining to the new digital flood hazard maps which were released last summer. The maps were developed by the Southwest Florida Water Management District (SWFWMD), in partnership with FEMA and Hernando County and show the extent to which areas throughout Hernando County are at risk for flooding. Used to help determine flood insurance and building requirements, the new maps replace maps that are approximately 25 years old.

The process included an extensive, multi-year review of the changes brought about by environmental, land use and other forces, the use of state-of-the-art aerial mapping and risk modeling techniques, and a comprehensive pre- and post-release review.

Residents and business owners can use the maps to obtain reliable information about their flood risk on a property-by-property basis. The maps also provide flood zone and elevation data to help community planners, engineers, builders and others decide where and how new structures, developments, and remodeling projects should be built.

The maps may be viewed online at www.hernandocounty.us/floodmap or in person at the Development Services Department, 789 Providence Blvd., Brooksville, Florida. The maps were displayed at two public workshops last August. Property owners are encouraged to check out the new flood maps and how their flood risk may have changed. Even though the maps are highly accurate, it is possible that owners may have more current or better data. If a property owner believes that the map is inaccurate regarding their property, they may file an appeal. Scientific or technical data must be submitted in support of the appeal. More information for filing an appeal is available at http://www.hernandocounty.us/floodmap/factsheets.asp or by calling the Flood Map Information Line at (352) 540-6300.
