Fertilizing Appropriately Presentation

Who: Sylvia Durell, Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ program coordinator, Hernando County Utilities Department

What: Recent studies have shown that nitrate levels are rising in many local water bodies. When fertilizer is applied correctly, the grass will use all the nitrogen. When applied incorrectly, the nitrogen can potentially cause pollution by leaching into our groundwater or washing off into lakes, rivers and the gulf. Participants receive a free “Do-It-Yourself Guide to Florida-Friendly Landscaping” booklet and learn about the proposed Hernando County fertilizer ordinance.

When: Wednesday, July 24, 2013 10:30 a.m. Where: Spring Hill Branch Library 9220 Spring Hill Dr., Spring Hill

Contact: Sylvia Durell at (352) 540-6230 or via email at sdurell@co.hernando.fl.us for more information.
The Florida-Friendly Landscaping program is currently co-funded by the Hernando County Utilities Department and the Southwest Florida Water Management District.

Rain Barrel Workshop

Who: Sylvia Durell, Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ program coordinator, Hernando County Utilities Department

What: A rain barrel workshop is scheduled to provide Hernando County residents information on the use and care of rain barrels. At the end of the workshop, participants will be guided through the assembly of their 60-gallon rain barrel. Using rain barrels in a landscape is a great way to reduce dependence on irrigation and provide water to plant beds and vegetable gardens. Diverting potential runoff also helps protect area waterways from potential pollution. Cost for the class is $55 per person. Customers of Hernando County Utilities Department will receive a $25 credit on their water bill. Space is limited. Pre-registration requested to ensure availability of a rain barrel. One barrel per customer.

When: Monday, July 22, 2013 5:30 p.m. Where: Hernando County Extension office 1653 Blaise Dr., Brooksville, FL 34601

Contact: Sylvia Durell at (352) 540-6230 or via email at sdurell@co.hernando.fl.us for more information.

A Message from our Crime Watch Head Bill Thompson

I heard back today from Deputy Spooner about the break in here in Preston Hollow. I asked him if he was aware of the break in here in Preston Hollow and he was not. However, he promptly looked up the address and familiarized himself with what had occurred. He said that he could not share much more than what I already knew because there is an active investigation going on. He did however mention that in addition to the home invasion there was also a second incident, an automobile break in. Deputy Spooner gave his usual advice about being "Alert" and locking the doors to our homes and cars.

At the last Sheriff's Department Crime Watch Meeting on June 12,2013, Lt. Siuci stated that overall crime in the Spring Hill area, District 2 is way down and believes that this is a result of his new pro-active crime unit that he put in place to combat crime. This unit has been responsible for approximately 120 arrest. Lt. Siuci also talked about being responsible and locking the doors to our home and cars. He did also emphasize removing all items from view in our cars, because leaving anything in view will only serve to encourage thieves to break in. I will keep everyone posted on anything new that I learn  .Bill
